Six years ago, Madurai-based shopkeeper Maniguntan was a prime candidate for ‘BlackBerry thumb’, without even owning a smartphone! The reason? The customers of the phone recharge vouchers he sold could neither read English or Tamil, nor could they key in the recharge numbers on their phones. So, Maniguntan ended up personally feeding in over 50 numbers daily — that’s roughly 1,000 keys at least, discounting SMS typing, etc.

Now, though, the kirana store owner has some respite, and has to exercise his vocal chords instead. He, or his customers, can now just dial a number, speak to an electronic voice that will not only recharge phones but also provide information on markets, weather, etc. The software recognises voice as a unique identity, instead of users typing in numbers using an interactive voice response (IVR) helpline. Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune has been awarded the mBillionth South Asia Award 2013 for its mobile-based surveillance quest using IT (MoSQuIT) initiative in the m-health category recently. MoSQuIT was developed by the knowledge discovery and analytics group (KDAG) of C-DAC, Pune. The award was handed over to Dr Medha Dhurandhar, associate director & HoD, KDAG, C-DAC at New Delhi.
