mBillionth App Competition for Angel Investment  (MAFIC)

Under the banner of mBillionth Award, Digital Empowerment Foundation is initiating mBillionth App Competition for Angel Investmentfrom this year – 2014. mBillionth Award is a dedicated platform, which explores the latent potential of mobile, & telecom sector across 8 countries in South Asia. This year mBillionth Award is celebrating its 5th years of recognizing the best practices for how Mobile as a first screen impacting masses across all sectors of operation.

The Angel investment competition will look at exploring app developers in 5 categories and each category will have ONE winner who will be given an angel investment which will vary between INR100, 000 and INR500, 000. The application can be in its prototype or alpha or beta stage. On the basis of the scope of the idea it will be further selected, funded and supported by DEF. The competition opens new windows for many app developers who have ideas but lack funds to implement their idea. Ideally it’s the individual developer who may be more apt for this call.

DEF believes that mobile is one of the significant contributors towards a nation’s development. By giving more opportunities to people to explore the arena of mobile we look forward to connecting the billions who live in India.

Mission

Through mBillionth Angel Fund & Incubation Center (MAFIC), Digital Empowerment Foundation wants to give chance to innovators who have interesting ideas but lack funds for implementation. Through this center DEF is taking a step forward and creating an extra platform to facilitate ideas for new start-ups in the field of mobile apps. Through more and more mobile apps for development purposes we believe that we are smoothening the process of access and information in many remote areas of the country.

CATEGORIES

App for School Teachers: This category targets about 7 million teachers from all over the country and welcomes all applications, which focuses on teachers. Additionally, the app could also envisage how we can have the teachers managed for their efficient work and impact, besides being able to impact best education to children.

App for Panchayats and Sarpanches: This category targets the 3 million elected Panchayat members in the country, one million of them are women. Under this category we invite all applications, which look at providing a one-stop platform to Panchayats and Sarpanches in the country so that the exchange of information and knowledge becomes easier and convenient among the members.

App for Health Workers: India has almost 2 million health workers. Any app, which concentrates on health workers across the country, can nominate them for this competition.

App for NGOs: There are approximately 3 million registered NGOs in the country even though 10 million are functionaries who work with NGOs. Any app, which provides the space to connect these NGOs or helps them in accelerating their tasks and orientation are welcome to apply.

App for Micro Enterprises: Any app that works towards connecting 50 million micro entrepreneurs present in the country can apply.  Any App platform, which provides opportunities to these enterprises to exchange their knowledge and possibilities, can nominate them for this competition.

Eligibility:

  • There are no charges to apply for the Nomination process.
  • The project should not have been funded from anywhere else.
  • The competition is open to only Indian applicants.
  • Very young and highly passionate techies would be given preference.
  • The applicant should herself/himself be the programmer, coder, visualiser & have very strong sense of understanding of the concerned subjects.
  • The applicant can be a team also.
  • Government /individuals /students /entrepreneurs /private sector /corporates /Academic institution /Academicians / Entrepreneurs /NGOs etc. can apply.

How to Apply

  • Interested entities can take part in the mBillionth Awards by either applying online or contacting expert panel for the nomination process through:
  • The fields marked mandatory in nomination forms are necessary to fill by the nominee.
  • Every Nomination entry is required to submit a demo presentation and video explaining the implementation idea. The jury will not consider the application it lacks any of these.
  • The presentation must give proper insight of your idea.
  • One product can be submitted for one category.
  • Irrespective of product/project language, all producer and project information must be in English
  • Any partially filled/not filled registration form will be rejected.
  • All participants will be informed about the status of the application after the jury process.
  • All the finalists are required to deliver a presentation on the day of the main event.

All shortlisted candidate will be called on 18th July to make a pitch to the jurors where the winner will be announced for funding.
